Vasco, Our Little Panama Cousin

Panama, 1906. A nation barely three years old, trembling with revolutionary energy, its future being carved by American engineers building the most ambitious canal in history. Into this intoxicating world steps Vasco Barretas, a clever Panamanian boy of Spanish and Indian descent, whose lazy streak is no match for his boundless curiosity. When his father, a lieutenant in the new National Guard, is honored with a military parade, Vasco convinces his American cousin Harlan Webster to join him in the hunt for the perfect viewing spot. What follows is a rollicking adventure through Panama's colorful streets, where two boys from different worlds must use their wits to navigate vendors, soldiers, and the chaos of a capital transformed by ambition and change. H. Lee M. Pike weaves cultural discovery into every page: the rhythm of traditional life, the clash of old and new, the wildlife and landscapes of a country at the crossroads of continents. But beneath the adventure lies something more resonant. Here are two cousins, one Panamanian and one American, finding friendship across cultural lines at a moment when their nations are quite literally reshaping the world together. The book captures a specific, fascinating historical moment when Panama was discovering what it wanted to become. For young readers, it remains a vivid portal into a time and place most American children never see in their textbooks.
