Our Little Korean Cousin

This 1905 children's book offers a window into turn-of-the-century Korea through the eyes of a young Seoul boy. Yung Pak lives in a world that feels both intimate and exotic to Western readers, where respect for elders shapes every interaction, where traditional hanbok marks the rhythms of daily life, and where a boy's journey toward manhood is marked by the ceremonial Investiture of the Top-knot. The narrative follows Yung Pak through his private tutoring in history and etiquette, his adventures at school and family gatherings, and a memorable pilgrimage to a famous monastery. What emerges is a tender portrait of childhood in a place most Western children have never seen, filtered through the curious and affectionate gaze of an imagined cousin. The book reflects both genuine cultural curiosity and the limitations of its era, making it a fascinating historical artifact that captures how early twentieth-century Western literature introduced Korean culture to young readers.
