Unterm Birnbaum

Beneath the pear tree in the quiet village of Tschechin, something terrible happened. Theodor Fontane, the master of German realism, transforms a provincial murder case into a haunting meditation on guilt, ambition, and the ghosts we carry in our own minds. Abel Hradscheck, the innkeeper and merchant, appears to be a man of substance and standing in his small community. But beneath the surface of his respectable life lies a web of financial desperation and old sins that threaten to collapse at any moment. When the past begins to surface, the supernatural bleeds into the realistic in ways that feel less like gothic flair and more like the literal weight of unspoken crimes. This first English translation reveals a side of Fontane rarely seen: a storyteller who could wring dread from a quiet room and make readers wonder whether the ghosts are real or merely the conscience made visible.
