Unlucky: A Fragment of a Girl's Life

What happens to a child when the adults sworn to protect her become strangers? Caroline Austin's Unlucky follows Helen, a girl whose life fractures the moment her father remarries. Mrs. Desmond is no villain: she loves the child in her abstract, Victorian way, believing that repression is virtue and that a child's passions are problems to be solved. But her best intentions curdle into something cruel when met with Helen's fierce, uncontainable spirit. The girl who once commanded her father's attention now watches him slip further into his new wife's influence, leaving her adrift in a household where she is loved incorrectly. The novel crackles with the specific pain of childhood: the injustice of being misunderstood, the desperate need to be seen, the way small rebellions become acts of survival. Helen is difficult, yes, she has passionate likes and dislikes and eager, uncontrolled impulses that Mrs. Desmond cannot parse. But Austin renders her frustration with psychological precision, capturing how a child's world collapses when adults fail to meet her where she is. The stepmother, for her part, is equally tragic: shaped by maiden aunts and repressive systems, she repeats the harm done to her because she knows no other way. This is a novel about the silence between generations, the wounds we inflict while believing we're doing right, and one girl's quiet fight to remain herself in a house that demands she shrink.
