Uncle Josh's Punkin Centre Stories

The year is 1890-something, and Uncle Josh Weathersby has just arrived in New York City from his beloved Punkin Centre. He carries with him a heart full of wonder, a dictionary of folksy wisdom, and absolutely no idea what he's about to encounter. What follows is a masterclass in gentle comedy, as this lovably bewildered countryman stumbles through the concrete canyons of Manhattan, takes the elevated train for the first time, and tries to make sense of a world where everything is faster, louder, and infinitely more confusing than back home. Cal Stewart created something remarkable in these pages: a character so authentically naive, so endearingly earnest, that you cannot help but laugh at his misadventures while rooting for him to somehow survive them. The humor lives in the small moments of cultural collision, the laughable misunderstandings, the gap between what Uncle Josh expects and what the big city actually delivers. These stories capture something universal about the American experience of leaving home for something larger, and doing so with a kind of bewildered grace. For readers who enjoy period humor, gentle satire, or simply a good laugh at one man's cheerful failure to understand the modern world.
