Tramping on Life: An Autobiographical Narrative

Harry Kemp was three days old when his mother died, and he would spend his entire life reaching for a ghost he never knew. This quietly devastating memoir traces his childhood in industrializing Mornington, Ohio, where he was raised by his grandmother's fierce love and abandoned to his grandfather's negligent chaos. The book pulses with the particular loneliness of a sensitive child in a harsh world, finding refuge in adventure novels while his father drifts aimlessly after his wife's death. Kemp writes with aching clarity about poverty, about neighborhoods remade by factories and changing identities, about how a boy forges himself from longing and imagination when the ground keeps shifting beneath him. This is not a triumphant story but something rarer: an honest reckoning with how loss shapes us, and how we build selves from the fragments we're left with.
