Tourmalin's Time Cheques

Peter Tourmalin is engaged to Sophia, a sensible woman who inspires anything but passion. While sailing home from Australia, he encounters a mysterious figure who offers him an extraordinary proposition: what if time could be deposited in a bank, like money? What if Peter could borrow hours from his future self to spend in the present moment? This is the delicious premise of Anstey's 1891 comic masterpiece. Peter, caught between his tedious engagement and his longing for the elusive Miss Tyrrell, decides to test the system. But time, once borrowed, must be repaid with interest, and the debt grows more treacherous by the day. Anstey's wit remains sharp, his social satire precise, and his central metaphor proves unexpectedly profound: we are all spending time we haven't yet earned, and the bill eventually comes due. A charming, funny meditation on commitment, temptation, and what it really means to invest in one's own life.
