Tioba, and Other Tales

A lonely mountain rises over a valley where the wind carries whispers of old conflicts and forgotten disasters. In these pages, Arthur Colton weaves tales of rural life where the ordinary collides with the mysterious: a stranger encounters Jim Hawks by the road, a woman arrives searching for a man she's never met, and the people of the valley move through their days marked by both comedy and loss. The mountain Tioba watches over them all, a presence that anchors stories of nature, folly, and the strange ways lives intersect. Colton's prose has the texture of folklore, blending realistic detail with hints of the uncanny, creating a world where a chance meeting can reshape a life and the landscape itself seems to hold memory. These are quiet stories, but they linger, the kind where a single gesture or unexplained event unlocks something deeper about community, fate, and what we owe to one another. For readers who find beauty in small-town America and the haunted spaces between legend and lived experience.
