Through the Gates of Old Romance

1762 Philadelphia. At one of Benjamin Franklin's famed musical evenings, Betsey Shewell finds herself caught in an impossible situation: she has fallen for Isaac Hunt, who is courting her niece. As Betsey drowns in her unrequited passion, she encounters a young painter named Benjamin West, whose face mirrors that of a lost love from her past. The narrative traces West's extraordinary journey from humble colonial origins to becoming one of history's most celebrated artists, while Betsey wrestles with her own heart's defiance against propriety. Through Franklin's drawing rooms and the corridors of early American society, Mills weaves a tender meditation on love deferred, ambition kindled, and the quiet rebellions possible even in an age when women were expected to subdue their desires. The result feels less like a historical novel and more like a letter from a vanished world, scented with candle wax and old longing.
