The Windfairies, and Other Tales

At a windmill by the sea, a lonely girl named Lucilla makes a discovery that will shape her entire life: the windfairies, tiny beings who dance on the breeze and can teach a human child their magical steps. What follows is a tale of wonder and consequence, as Lucilla grows from a solitary girl into a celebrated dancer, wins the heart of a sailor, and faces a test of loyalty that will determine whether the magic she was given can survive the compromises of ordinary life. Mary De Morgan wrote with a tender, unsentimental eye toward childhood longing and the price of wonder. The Windfairies endures because it captures something true about growing up: the ache to belong, the weight of promises made in innocence, and the way magic and loss are sometimes inseparable. These are quiet, beautiful tales that trust young readers with bittersweet endings and the understanding that love and duty do not always resolve neatly.
