The Virgin in Judgment

The moors loom large in this quietly devastating 1908 novel, where the Bowden family tends its small hold on Ringmoor Down against a changing world. David loves Margaret Stanbury in secret, his heart as wild and untamed as the land itself. Rhoda, his sister, speaks more freely with her dogs than with people, finding in their loyalty a purer truth than in human ceremony. When David finally proposes to Margaret in Dennycoombe Wood under darkness, he sets in motion a chain of events that will test every bond in the family. The title whispers of judgment yet to come, of virginity, of choice, of what tradition demands and what the heart insists upon. This is English pastoral fiction at its most atmospheric: all heath and stone walls, where love is conducted in shadows and loyalty wars with ambition. For readers who treasure early twentieth-century novels of quiet desperation and rural beauty.
