The Victim and the Worm

Post-war England casts its shadow over a grieving family in this psychologically acute novel. Oliver Brett, American inventor transplanted to the English countryside, sits beneath a yew tree haunted by the ghost of his dead wife and the invisible wounds of a world recently unmade. His daughters, Elise, who loves quietly, and Hermione, who loves disastrously, have become strangers to him and to each other, bound by a past neither can quite name. Bottome excavates the polite cruelties of family life with surgical precision. Hermione's failing marriage casts a long shadow, and beneath the drawing-room manners lies something darker: the slow work of guilt, the weight of unspoken losses, the way war doesn't end when the fighting stops. This is a novel about the things we cannot say to those closest to us, and the silence that slowly strangles.
