The Vicar's People
1881
Cornwall's abandoned mines and rigid social hierarchies form the backdrop for this muscular Victorian novel about a young man's determination to forge a meaningful life. Geoffrey Trethick arrives in Carnac with ambition and idealism, only to find a community suspicious of outsiders and an economy still bleeding from failed ventures. His mining endeavors promise both opportunity and conflict in equal measure. At the novel's heart stands Rhoda Penwynn, daughter of the formidable banker Lionel Penwynn, torn between her father's views on money and status and her own conscience. Her concern for the local community and her feelings toward the principled Mr. Tregenna create a tension that mirrors Geoffrey's own struggle to find purpose in an unwelcoming place. Fenn paints a vivid picture of late Victorian England, where industrial progress collides with ancient traditions and individual aspiration battles against entrenched class structures. The result is a satisfying exploration of identity, ambition, and the courage to follow one's convictions when society demands compliance.
