The Trials of the Soldier's Wife: A Tale of the Second American Revolution

May 1861, New Orleans. Alfred Wentworth departs for war, leaving his wife Eva and their two young children. What follows is a portrait of one woman's quiet devastation as a nation tears itself apart around her. Abrams, writing with the urgency of someone who lived through the conflict, renders the daily terror of waiting for news that may never come, the gnawing poverty, the indignities faced by women alone in a society that offers them no quarter. Eva's world contracts to the size of her small home: two children to feed, rent to find, rumors to fear. The soldiers' battles may happen on distant fields, but her war is fought in silence, in the dark, in the space between letters. When tragedy finally arrives, it arrives without warning, without dignity, without comfort. This is not a romanticized tale of noble suffering but something more honest: a story about what war does to those who stay behind, told in language that still carries the ache of 1864. The soldiers wife becomes a ghost of her former self, and her husband returns home to find only a grave.
