The Torch Bearer: A Camp Fire Girls' Story

The book opens with Laura Haven drifting in her canoe across still water, when a melodic call reaches her from the shore. Something in that sound reconnects her to a longing she'd nearly forgotten: the desire for real connection, for purpose, for a place where she belongs. She follows the sound to discover the Camp Fire Girls, and her reunion with friend Anne Wentworth becomes the key to a whole new world. This is 1913, and the Camp Fire Girls movement was something new and radical: girls gathering in nature, learning skills, serving their communities, supporting each other. Thurston captures the vibrancy of this perfectly. The Council Fire approaches, and Laura finds herself drawn into warm friendships, meaningful activities, and the genuine satisfaction of contributing to others. What makes this endure isn't just nostalgia for a bygone era. It's the universal hunger this story satisfies: the need to be seen, to matter, to belong to something larger than yourself. Perfect for readers who love gentle historical fiction with heart.
