American Literature, Novels

A young city physician trades the gaslit streets for a remote Pennsylvania valley, expecting a quiet country practice. What he finds is a village paralyzed by fear: the locals won't venture past dusk, crossroads are marked with strange protections, and the name 'Lessing' draws only silence and averted eyes. When Dr. Haverill is summoned to treat the patriarch of the Bend farm, he discovers wounds that don't match any medical reality, a family locked in grim withholding, and something vast moving through the surrounding woods that the locals refuse to name. As the physician's rational worldview collides with ancient, irrational dread, he must choose between abandoning his principles to survive or holding fast to a science that may offer no protection against what waits in the dark. Written in 1913, this is early American gothic horror at its most unsettling: not splatter or shock, but the slow creep of wrongness into an ordinary world, and the terrible price of curiosity.

“I rose, paid my bill and went out, leaving him, I have no doubt, with the impression that I was a particularly hidebound idiot. But I had my own reasons for making no further contribution to his data. I would see this thing through without any assistance from a too enterprising press.””

— Harper Williams

“The man was dead, but the curious part, which had evidently struck my acquaintance also, was that there were no injuries found on the body except a single diagonal scratch across the face, which was of sufficient depth to have destroyed one eye and to lay the entire cheek open.””

— Harper Williams
