The Strike of a Sex: A Novel.

What if women simply refused? That's the audacious premise of this 1891 speculative novel, one of the earliest works of feminist utopian fiction. When the women of America go on strike, withdrawing from homes, workplaces, and all traditional roles, society collapses into disarray. Rodney Carford arrives in a city transformed by the Great Woman's Strike, witnessing a world where men wander dishevelled, homes fall into ruin, and the absence of domestic labor reveals just how thoroughly civilization depends on women's invisible work. Through his bewildered eyes, we encounter a society unravelling, and women demanding not just political and economic rights, but an irrevocable right to their own bodies: their "Magna Charta," the freedom to consent to motherhood. The novel blends gently satirical social commentary with earnest advocacy, imagining what happens when half the population withdraws their participation until their demands are met. It's a fascinating period document that grapples with questions about reproduction, consent, and power that remain startlingly urgent today.
