That story, about a Dutch balloonist's impossible journey to the moon, marked one of Poe's first published fictions, a sign of the ambitions stirring in American letters. The June issue captures a profession in flight: writers experimenting with form, testing American subjects against European models, building something new from old materials. For readers today, it serves as a time capsule of literary fermentation, the moment before Hawthorne and Melville but after Cooper, when anyone with pen and vision could contribute to a national conversation.
