Published in 1708, this audacious burlesque poem stands as one of the earliest works of American literature, a fact that alone should arrest any reader interested in where our literary tradition began. Ebenezer Cooke, an Englishman with grand ambitions, sets sail for Maryland to make his fortune as a tobacco merchant, only to discover that the New World is far stranger and more chaotic than any travelogue had warned. The poem chronicles his misadventures among colonists drunk on rum and ambition, colonial officials more interested in graft than governance, and Native peoples rendered through the bewildered lens of a man who cannot quite believe what he's seeing. Cooke wields mock-heroic verse, treating the squalid realities of tobacco farming and frontier debauchery with the grandiloquent language of epic poetry, creating a delicious tension between his lofty aspirations and the mud-soaked, whiskey-soaked reality of colonial Maryland. The satire is sharp and often surprising: the author mocks not just the "peculiarities" of colonists but the very colonial project itself, questioning what it means for an Englishman to seek fortune in a land that promises much and delivers chaos. This is a vital, funny, occasionally uncomfortable window into the birth of American identity, crafted by a man who arrived full of hope and left, if not wiser, at least profoundly entertained by the absurdity of it all.
