The Smoky God; Or, a Voyage to the Inner World

In 1908, Willis George Emerson gave the world one of the first hollow earth novels, a wild tale of a Norwegian sailor named Olaf Jansen who claims to have sailed through an entrance near the North Pole into a vast subterranean realm. Jansen spent two years navigating a luminous underworld illuminated by a strange smoky central sun, where a civilization of giants built cities and believed they inhabited the original Garden of Eden. The narrative frame finds the aged Jansen, ninety-five and dying, entrusting his extraordinary story to the author, an old man with impossible memories, insisting his tale is no fantasy. What emerges is a strange, compelling blend of adventure narrative and mystical speculation, a book that predates modern hollow earth fiction and invites readers to wonder: what if everything we know about our planet is wrong? This book endures for anyone who loves early science fiction, pulp adventure, or the idea that the world contains more mystery than science can explain.
