Emerson on Sound Money: A Speech, 1896

Delivered at the height of the 1896 presidential race, this fiery speech captures a pivotal moment when Americans argued bitterly over the nation's monetary future. Willis George Emerson stands squarely with the Republican Party's defense of the gold standard, directly taking aim at William Jennings Bryan and free silver advocates whose proposals he portrays as economic ruin. The speech pulses with the anxieties of an era when farmers faced debt crises, Panic of 1893 devastation lingered, and millions wondered whether sound currency or inflated silver would save them. Emerson layers historical argument with patriotic appeal, insisting that rational voters must reject what he sees as dangerous populism and embrace the stability of metallic backing. Whether you find his conclusions persuasive or not, the speech remains a vivid artifact of one of American history's most consequential economic debates, preserving the rhetoric and reasoning of gold standard supporters who feared that silver inflation would destroy the nation's credit. For readers interested in late 19th-century American politics, the Bryan era, or the evolution of monetary policy, this document offers an unfiltered window into how one orator framed the financial battle of his time.
