The Sins of the Cities of the Plain; Or, The Recollections of a Mary-Ann: With Short Essays on Sodomy and Tribadism

Among the earliest English novels to openly depict same-sex desire, this 1881 work emerged from the shadows of Victorian London itself. Written by a man draw from the notorious Cleveland Street brothel scandal that rocked British society, the novel follows a young «Mary-Ann» (the period's term for a male sex worker who dressed in women's clothing) through the city's hidden queer underworld. The narrator, a writer encountered in Leicester Square, brings Jack Saul back to his chambers, beginning an odyssey through illegal male brothels, encrypted meeting spots, and the desperate lives of men who loved men in an era when such love carried prison sentences. What distinguishes this text from mere pornography is its startling documentary impulse: Saul records the rituals, languages, and survival strategies of Victorian London's gay subculture with the eye of an ethnographer. The book circulated privately for decades before becoming a foundational text of gay literature, predating Oscar Wilde's trials by a decade and offering an unparalleled window into lives that had to be lived in darkness.
