The Setons

Scotland, 1917. The Seton family gathers in their modest Glasgow home, navigating the strange double existence of wartime Britain: tea cups and telegram fears, neighborhood gossip and global catastrophe. O. Douglas writes with quiet devastating precision about the small dramas of domestic life: a daughter's anxiety about her family's social standing, a father's weariness after work, the unspoken worries that hang over every dinner table where a chair may remain perpetually empty. Yet this is no bleak portrait. Douglas finds profound warmth in the ordinary: the humor of elderly relatives, the fierce loyalty of neighbors, the way a family pulls together when the world trembles. Her prose has the quality of overhearing a conversation you'd give anything to be part of. The Setons are not extraordinary people, but their story captures something essential about how ordinary humans endure extraordinary times: one careful day at a time, held steady by love and routine and the small dignities of home.
