The Scarlet Feather

When Reverend John Swinton opens his door to face the sheriff's writ, he does what he's done for months: he hides the truth from his congregation and his own family. The rector of a small parish, John has been spiraling toward bankruptcy, kept afloat only by his wife's dwindling hope and the blind faith that something will change. Mary Swinton, meanwhile, laments the gap between the life she was promised and the one she's actually inherited, while her father's miserly reputation haunts her own attempts at dignity. Their son Dick carries the weight of everyone's secrets, caught between the man his father wants him to become and the uncertain future pressing against their crumbling front door. As engagements dissolve and war gathers on the horizon, The Scarlet Feather maps the slow collapse of a family determined to maintain appearances even as everything falls apart. Townley writes with quiet devastating precision about the particular cruelty of genteel poverty, where the worst sin isn't debt but admitting it exists.
