The Rasp

A cabinet minister lies murdered in his country house, and the police are out of their depth. Enter Colonel Anthony Gethryn, a detective with a past as murky as the case itself. The victim was a man many had reason to hate, and the suspect list at Lacey Court runs from resentful family members to guests with dangerous secrets. But as Gethryn digs deeper, the murder reveals itself as something far more personal than a political killing - a reckoning with an old wrong that someone has waited years to settle. Philip MacDonald constructs his mystery with the precision of a clockmaker and the patience of a spider, letting tension accumulate until the final chapters explode into a revelation that reshapes everything that came before. The Rasp is Golden Age detection at its most satisfying: a puzzle that plays fair with the reader while remaining genuinely impossible to solve before its stunning conclusion.
