The story follows the aftermath of General Quintard's death, exploring themes of inheritance and community judgment through the eyes of his young ward, Hannibal Wayne Hazard. Kester's work reflects the transition of the region from lawlessness to a more structured society and was a bestseller, ranking as the second-best selling fiction book in the U.S. that year. Kester wrote this novel while living in Virginia, shortly before his death in July 1911.
