The Philosophy of the Plays of Shakspere Unfolded

Delia Salter Bacon

British Literature, Philosophy & Ethics, Plays/Films/Dramas

In 1857, a brilliant and unmarried woman dared to challenge literary history. Delia Salter Bacon's revolutionary treatise argues that Shakespeare's plays are not merely brilliant drama but encrypted philosophy, the collective wisdom of an intellectual circle including Sir Francis Bacon, Edmund Spenser, and Sir Walter Raleigh, woven into enigmas and puzzles waiting to be deciphered. Nathaniel Hawthorne, himself uncertain of her conclusions, wrote the preface and helped finance publication. Bacon contends that Elizabethan political tension forced philosophers to conceal their ideas within dramatic form, creating a vast hidden treasury of moral, political, and ethical thought beneath the surface of the plays. Though the Baconian theory would eventually be debunked, this passionate and eccentric work remains a fascinating artifact of 19th-century intellectual life, a window into how one woman read against the grain of centuries and found a secret philosophy where others saw only theater. It endures as proof that great literature invites endless interpretation.
