The Parts Men Play

In fog-drenched November London, the postman delivers his daily cargo of hopes and humiliations: rejection letters to struggling writers in garrets, begging notes from tailors to gentlemen in Pall Mall clubs, charity appeals and legal documents shuffling through the city's social machinery. It is into this world that Beverley Baxterintroduces us to Lady Durwent, an audacious hostess who has mastered the art of assembling dinner parties where the conversation crackles with purpose. Her latest gathering brings together H. Stackton Dunckley, a writer grappling with the brutal economics of unrecognized genius, the American novelist Austin Selwyn, and the formidable Madame Carlotti, wife of an Italian diplomat. As these figures navigate the treacherous waters of early twentieth-century London society, Baxter dissects the rituals of class, the comedy of pretension, and the invisible borders between British reserve and American frankness. The novel works as both a sharp social comedy and a tender portrait of artists trying to matter in a world that measures worth in currency, not creativity.
