British Literature, Novels

This is where it all began. Published in 1862-63, three years before The Moonstone claimed that title, The Notting Hill Mystery stands as the first detective novel in English. Charles Felix, writing under a pseudonym that remains debated to this day, invented the genre that would obsess the world.Insurance investigator Ralph Henderson takes on what seems a straightforward case: the death of Madame R__, wife of the sinister Baron R__, who apparently swallowed acid while sleepwalking in her husband's laboratory. But nothing adds up. The Baron had taken out numerous life insurance policies on his wife, and other deaths in his circle seem equally suspect. Henderson must untangle a web of mesmerism, identity deception, and cold calculation to expose what really happened. The novel's radical structure makes it feel startlingly modern. Rather than a flowing narrative, Henderson presents his case through diary entries, family letters, chemical analysis reports, witness interviews, and a folded crime scene map. These documentary techniques wouldn't become common in detective fiction until the 1920s. For anyone who wants to understand where the genre came from - and see its darkest, cleverest origins - this is the place to start.
