The New Abelard: A Romance, Volume 3 (of 3)

The final volume of Robert Williams Buchanan's Victorian romance concludes the tragic tale of Alma Craik and Ambrose Bradley, whose profound misunderstanding has torn them apart. Having fled across Europe in search of solace, Alma retreats into religious devotion, seeking peace from the anguish of believing herself betrayed. Meanwhile, Ambrose writhes under the weight of guilt, haunted by his failures and desperate to find her, to explain, to undo the damage that silence and misreading have wrought. The New Abelard reimagines the legendary medieval romance of Abelard and Heloise for the nineteenth century, transforming scholastic tragedy into a story of modern spiritual crisis. Buchanan probes the terrible costs of pride, the destructive power of assumptions unexamined, and the question of whether souls so wounded can ever find their way back to each other or to God. This is a novel about the conversations we fail to have, the words we cannot unsay, and whether redemption is possible when love has been shattered by its own cowardice and confusion.
