The Necromancers

After Amy Nugent's tragic death, young Laurie Baxter finds himself unbearable. His grief drives him toward the burgeoning Spiritualist movement sweeping Edwardian England, desperate to reach her across the boundary that has swallowed his love. What begins as mournful séances and innocent attempts at contact deepens into something far darker, as Laurie discovers that some doors, once opened, cannot be closed and the forces waiting on the other side have their own designs. Written in 1909 by Catholic priest Robert Hugh Benson, this is early horror at its most unsettling: a novel that understands grief can become obsession, love can become selfishness, and the longing to speak with the dead might attract something entirely other than the departed. The novel that would later influence Hitchcock's Spellbound remains a chilling meditation on what we risk when we refuse to let go.
