The Motor Maids Across the Continent

In 1910, five women climb into an automobile called the Comet and point it toward the Pacific. That's the whole radical premise: a cross-country road trip undertaken not because life forced them onto the road, but because they chose it. Katherine Stokes captures something genuinely thrilling about the early days of automobiling, when a machine was still a miracle and the open road meant genuine escape. Helen Campbell starts the journey with reservations about becoming a "gypsy vagabond" but quickly finds her spirit lifting as the miles accumulate. The Motor Maids face flat tires, questionable roads, the occasional aeroplane overhead, and the endless surprise of a country still learning how to move. What makes this book endure isn't its plot but its spirit: it's a portrait of friendship forged in motion, of women who chose freedom over safety, and of an America that hadn't yet hardened into the forms we know. For readers who love early road narratives, period adventure, or any story about women refusing to stay home.
