The Monikins
1835
What if the explorers who stumbled upon a civilization of intelligent monkeys found in them a mirror too honest for comfort? Sir John Goldencalf, an English gentleman of modest means and considerable ego, joins Captain Noah Poke, an American sea dog of even more modest means, on a voyage to an Antarctic archipelago where monkeys have developed not just speech but an entire civilization. Their society mirrors human institutions with uncomfortable precision: courts where justice becomes theater, social hierarchies built on nothing but inherited rank, and a merchant class obsessed with wealth as the measure of worth. Goldencalf observes it all with theronically blind confidence of a man certain of his own superiority, only to discover that the monkeys find humans equally baffling and absurd. Cooper abandons his frontier Leatherstocking Tales for something stranger: a Swiftian beast fable that uses talking apes to dissect class pretension, materialism, and the way status becomes performance. The novel failed to find its audience in 1835 and remains Cooper's strangest, most forgotten work. Yet it shows a popular writer deliberately risking his reputation on something wild and uneven, a satirical fever dream that asks whether civilization is really anything more than monkeys in better clothes.
