The Mirror of Literature, Amusement, and Instruction. Volume 14, No. 399, Supplementary Number

A preserved slice of Regency-era England, this 1820 literary periodical offers a window into what educated readers consumed between novels and essays. The volume blends travel writing (including an essay on Verona), sentimental fiction like Hon. Mrs. Norton's "Walter Errick," and lighter fare such as "The Man and the Lioness." Poetry anchors the collection, with work by John Keats alongside verses from Dr. Bowring and others, ranging from whimsical to aching. The illustrations ground these pages in their historical moment, making the literary tastes and cultural curiosities of 1820s England tangible. This is not literature as canon but literature as lived experience: what people actually read, shared, and discussed. For readers curious about the textures of historical reading culture, or anyone who believes magazines once held a different kind of magic, these pages offer genuine immersion in a vanished world of letters.
