The Loves of Pelleas and Etarre

On the first morning of Easter, two old bodies lie awake in a cold house, longing for church. Pelleas and Etarre, decades married, find themselves trapped by ice and age on the most sacred day of the year. Their young neighbor's unexpected arrival after Pelleas's dangerous fall becomes a quiet miracle, a moment where the world outside their shrinking domestic sphere breaks in. Through intimate reflection and the small dramas of desire thwarted by physical limitation, Gale captures something universal: the way love persists even as the flesh fails, the way community arrives uninvited, the way Easter morning light falls just as beautifully on a ceiling as it does through a church window. This is a novel about what remains when everything essential has been stripped away, and what Gale reveals is that what remains is everything.
