The Lion and the Unicorn

Richard Harding Davis, the man who defined the Gilded Age adventure, turns his sharp eye to the collision of Old World and New in this sparkling social comedy. Philip Carroll, an ambitious American playwright, arrives in London seeking his fortune and finds something more complicated: a society where status is inherited, not earned, and where his Yankee directness both charms and destabilizes. Through the window of Prentiss's flower shop, where a lion and unicorn watch over the comings and goings of London's elite, Davis chronicles the small wars of courtship and class that define his characters' lives. Captain Carrington rides off to war while Philip navigates the treacherous waters of British society, caught between the enchanting Marion Cavendish and the determined Helen Cabot. The novel hums with the energy of a city on the cusp of modernity, where old empires and new ambitions clash over tea and territorial disputes. Davis skewers the pretensions of both nations with a light touch, making this as much a comedy of manners as it is a romance of adaptation. For readers who savor the genre of Americans abroad, untangling themselves in foreign webs of expectation, this is a gem of its era.
