The Life of Bret Harte, with Some Account of the California Pioneers

Bret Harte essentially invented the American short story. Before him, American literature looked to Europe for its models. After his tales of California mining camps appeared in the 1860s, the frontier had its voice, and it spoke with an authority that shocked readers expecting quaint regional sketches. This biography, written in the early 20th century when firsthand memories of the Gold Rush still lived, traces that transformation from Harte's obscure New York childhood through his years as a printer's apprentice, newspaper man, and finally, the celebrated author who captured a vanished world. Merwin does not isolate his subject: he weaves Harte's biography with vivid accounts of the California pioneers themselves, the rough prospectors, saloon keepers, and road agents whose language and lives Harte transmuted into literature. The result is not merely a life of a writer but a portrait of the cultural furnace in which American regional fiction was forged. For anyone interested in how American literature found its own voice, this remains an essential document, tracing the precise moments where a man's experience and his era's energy collided to create something new.
