The Levellers: A Dialogue Between Two Young Ladies, Concerning Matrimony, Proposing an Act for Enforcing Marriage, for the Equality of Matches, and Taxing Single Persons

The Levellers: A Dialogue Between Two Young Ladies, Concerning Matrimony, is a mid-18th century pamphlet written anonymously. It features a conversation between two women, Politica and Sophia, who discuss the social implications of marriage, critiquing the transactional nature of marital arrangements and advocating for equality in matches. The dialogue reflects emerging feminist thought and critiques societal expectations regarding wealth and gender roles, proposing ideas such as taxing bachelors to encourage marriage. This work is notable for its early exploration of gender equality and the moral character in marital choices.
