The Last of the De Mullins exposes the fragile machinery of Edwardian respectability and finds it decidedly rusty. The De Mullins, once-gilded aristocrats, now face the indignity of watching their estate slip through their fingers while clinging to the rituals that once defined them. When the family hatches a scheme to marry off their daughter Cynthia to a wealthy suitor, they assume old charm and new money will make a tidy bargain. Then Ronald arrives: the son of a self-made man, utterly indifferent to the social climbing his fortune should enable. What unfolds is a sharp, funny reckoning with class, pride, and the unbearable weight of pretending everything is fine when the roof is falling in. St. John Hankin writes with a dramatist's precision, letting the absurdity speak for itself while exposing the human cost beneath the corsets and cursive. The play endures because its subject never truly aged: who among us hasn't performed dignity while internally hemorrhaging?
