The Land of Lure: A Story of the Columbia River Basin

In the unforgiving Columbia River Basin, Travis Gully tends rented fields while watching his neighbors chase dreams westward. When his friends leave for better land, something awakens in him, a hunger not just for crops, but for ownership, for a piece of earth that belongs to his family alone. He gathers his wife and children and sets into motion a decision that will test every bond they share against a landscape that offers no promises. The land lures with possibility, but the journey exacts a cost in sweat, doubt, and the weight of abandoning everything familiar. Smith writes with stark, economical prose that captures both the brutal reality of homesteading and the quiet poetry of Americans chasing ownership against impossible odds. This is a novel about what it means to uproot your life for the chance to put down roots.
