The Kingdom Round the Corner: A Novel

The war took five years of his life. Now it's taken everything else. Tabs steps off the train into a March morning in 1919, his uniform still fitting even though nothing else does. London hums with a strange, jaunty energy, as if the armistice were a victory rather than a surrender to exhaustion. Five years ago, he left a boy with a future. He returns a man who can barely remember what that word meant. He's looking for Terry - the Terry who wrote letters so tender he carried them next to his heart through the trenches, the Terry who promised to wait. But when he finds her, something has shifted. She greets him with warmth, yes, but there's a distance now, a careful politeness that cuts deeper than coldness. The kingdom round the corner - that small, private future they once imagined - seems to have shrunk to nothing while he was gone. A quiet, aching novel about what remains when the cheering stops.
