The Humorous Poetry of the English Language; from Chaucer to Saxe
1884
Five centuries of laughter, carefully selected. This 1884 anthology gathers the finest humorous poems from the English literary tradition, from Chaucer's medieval ribaldry through Burns's rustic wit to Byron's satirical fire. The editor, confronting the surprising scarcity of truly effective comic verse, spent years curating works that still land today: poems about botched courtships, misadventures in love, mock-heroic battles, and the eternal absurdity of human nature. What emerges is not merely a collection of jokes in verse, but a portrait of what made English speakers laugh across half a millennium: the same foolish pride, the same romantic disasters, the same delight in linguistic play. The collection excludes anything base, favoring wit that endures. For anyone curious about where modern humor inherited its DNA, this anthology is a living archive of the comic impulse in English poetry.
