The History of Tom Thumb: To Which Are Added the Stories of the Cat and the Mouse and Fire! Fire! Burn Stick!

He was no bigger than a thumb, and he was the most famous little man in English history. First published in 1621, this is the original tale of Tom Thumb, the tiny hero who tumbles into a cow's mouth, gets baked into a cake, and stumbles into one peril after another with nothing but his wits to save him. The stories that follow - the cautionary tale of the Cat and the Mouse, and the rollicking Fire! Fire! Burn Stick! - reinforce a simple, ancient truth: the small can outsmart the large, and cleverness matters more than strength. These are not sanitized modern retellings. This is the raw, archaic voice of seventeenth-century English folklore, with its rough humor and unexpected darkness. It endures not because it's polished, but because it's genuine: a window into what people told their children four hundred years ago, when stories were meant to entertain and terrify in equal measure. For readers who want to understand where fairy tales come from, or who simply want to meet the smallest hero in all of English literature.
