The History of Sir Richard Calmady: A Romance

At Brockhurst, a grand estate built by his ancestors and shadowed by a rumored curse, Sir Richard Calmady returns to claim his birthright: wealth, status, and a body marked by a childhood accident that left him physically disabled. Far from the pitiful figure society might expect, Richard has forged himself into a respected man of the world. But behind the measured facade lies a wound that refuse to heal. When he brings his wife Katherine to Brockhurst, she finds not a home but a stage where old tragedies replay and the weight of family legacy presses down on every breath. Katherine longs for motherhood, for warmth, for a husband who will look beyond his own pain. But Richard's guarded distance and the estate's dark whispers create a chasm neither knows how to cross. Malet writes with unflinching honesty about desire shamed by circumstance, about marriage as a kind of solitary confinement, and about the way disability shapes not just the body but the entire architecture of a life. This is romance drenched in Gothic shadow: a novel that asks what remains of love when flesh betrays and legacy becomes a kind of sentence.
