The Hindered Hand: Or, the Reign of the Repressionist

The year is 1905. A young white woman slips a note to a Black porter on a train heading to Almaville, asking for help. The porter hesitates - even this small act of interracial contact could ruin his life. This is the electric opening to Sutton E. Griggs's lost masterpiece, a novel that imagines what happens when a white southerner reaches across the color line and asks for solidarity. Griggs constructs a world where racial lines seem insurmountable, then asks: what would it take to cross them? Through the white woman's journey into the Black community, through her connection with a young Black woman named Foresta, and through the bold activism of characters like Ensal Ellwood who refuse to accept their assigned place, Griggs explores the possibilities and dangers of interracial alliance in Jim Crow America. This is a novel that doesn't flinch from the costs of resistance or the complexity of building bridges across impossible divides. It endures because it was written in an era of lynchings and segregation laws by an author who dared to imagine them ending.
