The Hill: A Romance of Friendship

At Harrow in the 1890s, fifteen-year-old John Verney arrives carrying the weight of family legend: his uncle is a famous explorer, and John must somehow measure up. The school that produced Byron and Churchill opens before him like a world of possibility and dread. His uncle's portrait hangs in the library, and every master seems to compare him to a ghost he never knew. But what John finds instead is Scaife, a charismatic older boy whose charm masks something dangerous, and Desmond, a fellow student whose friendship becomes the center of John's universe. Vachell captures the fierce intensity of adolescent attachment with a frankness that startled Edwardian readers, exploring what it means to admire someone so completely that you lose yourself in the process. The Hill is a nuanced portrait of friendship at its most consuming, set against the rigid hierarchies and ancient rituals of Britain's most storied public school.
