The Heritage of Unrest

The frontier has never been kind to those who belong to no single world. Felipa Cabot, daughter of mixed heritage, stands at the crossroads of cultures that refuse to accept her. When we first meet her, she is separated from the soldiers who have become her only family, alone in a desolate landscape facing a decision that will reshape her entire future. Gwendolen Overton's 1901 novel places a woman of mixed ancestry at the center of a narrative dominated by military-Native tensions and the brutal realities of the American frontier. Felipa must navigate a world that sees her as belonging fully to neither side. Her duty to her fellow soldiers, her connection to a young girl she has sworn to protect, and the unfulfilled promises hinted at in her past with Lieutenant Landor all pull her in different directions. The novel refuses easy answers about identity or belonging; instead, it traces the cost of existing between worlds. For readers seeking historical fiction that centers marginalized perspectives often erased from the frontier narrative, this novel endures as a quiet but powerful testament to resilience and moral obligation in uncertain times.
