The Helpers

Henry Jeffard arrives in Denver with the kind of hope that only the desperate can carry. An Easterner chasing gold and glory in the mountain air, he finds instead the crushing weight of a city that doesn't notice him. The opera house where he seeks escape becomes the site of his humiliation: watched, judged, found wanting by two sharp-tongued young women whose banter cuts deeper than he expects. But it's Connie whose unexpected kindness cracks something open in him, whose conversation plants the first green shoot of possibility in soil he thought was dead. Lynde writes with quiet precision about the small moments that reroute a life: a word of encouragement, a gesture of seen-ness, the radical act of treating a stranger as a human being rather than a failure. This is a novel about what it costs to start over, and the strangers who make it possible.
