The Heiress; A Comedy, in Five Acts
1796
The Heiress is a comedy play written by John Burgoyne and first published in 1796. Set in 18th-century London, it explores romantic entanglements and social dynamics through the story of Miss Alscrip, a young heiress, and her suitor, Lord Gayville. The play highlights the transactional nature of love and societal expectations, using witty dialogue and comedic scenarios to examine the complexities of courtship and familial obligations. Its humorous take on social status and financial aspirations makes it a notable work of English drama from the period.
