The Great American Pie Company

In this gleefully absurd early 20th-century satire, two small-town rivals - the philosophical Ephraim Deacon, whose wife bakes transcendent pies, and the aggressively competitive Phineas Doolittle - find themselves locked in a pie-making battle that somehow spirals into a scheme to dominate not just the pie market, but farms, fruit suppliers, bakeries, and eventually railroads themselves. What begins as a humble local rivalry becomes an increasingly ridiculous vision of American corporate domination, all played for laughs. Butler's comedy targets the wild optimism of American entrepreneurial dreams, the absurdity of vertical integration, and the collision between small-town values and grand ambitions. The novel crackles with comedic exchanges as these two dreamers scheme their way toward a pie empire that may be more fantasy than reality. It endures because it captures something timeless about American ambition: the glorious, foolhardy belief that you can conquer the world with the right recipe.
